Hopefully .. from those dmesgs for 8.0 and 8.1 I was surprised that it eventually seemed to work on 8.0 .. so it could well be a timing issue. Kuba, just in case you're unfamiliar with tunables, you could add (eg) debug.acpi.ec.timeout=1000 to /boot/loader.conf and reboot.
