I'm not sure what you're using to configure XFree86, but if you use the 
good ol' reliable xf86config(1), you'll find the card listed as

 530  Voodoo3 (generic)                                 Voodoo3

I've gotten this working with an AGP 3500 (at a friend's house) and it 
works like a charm on my PCI Voodoo3-2000. No 3d acceleration, but on that 
box I don't care, and it gives me 1280x1024 @ 24 bpp which is great.
