Your missing the whole point. The FBSD handbook says to use http://www.freebsd.org/ports/index.html to find port and package names and it only shows the names with versions suffix appended to the names. Pkg_add -r points to directory location with out names with versions suffix appended.

That's by design. If you want the latest version of the package you don't care what the specific version is. If you care about downloading a specific version, you can download it from the All/ directory or from one of the other subdirectories (e.g. games/).
