A year later, I'm still not satisfied with the default despotism
title! In most cases, "Dictator" feels IMO clunky and out of place.

New suggestion: Prince/Princess

This is not a prince in the modern sense, as the offspring of a
reigning monarch, but in the classical and medieval sense. The word
traces its roots to the Roman Republic, where it meant something like
"prime citizen" or just generically "leader". In medieval Europe, a
prince was a reigning sovereign of a princely state or "principality",
generally smaller than a kingdom or duchy. (Three principalities are
still in existence today: Andorra, Lichtenstein and Monaco.)

Equivalent terms in other languages include German "Fürst" and Russian "knyaz".
