Follow-up Comment #8, patch #1246 (project freeciv):
Another couple of thoughts in support of the current scheme:
The French, Spanish, and German nations are fully based on modern-day
countries, while f.e. the Occitans, Catalans etc are mainly historical realms
and/or modern cultural-linguistic regions. It is an anachronism for the two
kinds to appear alongside each other in a game. Perhaps we want to add
Frankish and Castilian nations?
There are more than a few cases where cities overlap. In the case the
spelling of a city differs between the two - f.e. Gerona (Castilian Spanish)
vs. Girona (Catalan) - both will appear in the game essentially creating
A nation conflict in Freeciv is not strictly 'enforced'. It only applies to
random nation selection. You can always override it by manually picking
nations for each player.
