Follow-up Comment #1, patch #4254 (project freeciv):

Someone on IRC (maybe jheusala?) was saying they are bumping up against the
current player limit in their games (Longturn-style but many of the slots end
up filled with idlers so they don't get 126 active players). Any reason not to
bump all the way up to the next power of two (256 with say 10 specials)?

Last time we were looking at this (patch #1731) there were problems with
various things scaling nastily with player numbers (particularly diplstates
increasing as the square). Do those restrictions still apply in the current
code?
