Follow-up Comment #23, bug #21851 (project freeciv):

I have tested the patch #5776 and I'm afraid it does not fix the memory leak.
(S2_5 rev27747 with gtk-2 client)

I found that the main trigger of the memory leak is actually to scroll down
and up the list of items, even if the items are not really selected nor
highlighted.

I attach 2 screenshots where you can see the increase of memory usage by the
Xorg process from 100 MB to 470 MB in a few seconds:
-1st screen as reference, with the city dialog already opened.
-2nd screen after I click the dropdown menu, and then I scroll up and down
during some seconds.
Those 400 MB are not freed until I close freeciv.
