Follow-up Comment #3, bug #24298 (project freeciv):

Wow.  Thank you for all of the quick responses.  I can't figure out how to
change the title of this bug report.  It would be great if one of you could
change the title to "Freeciv crashes when attempting to view a city using the
amplio2 tileset after Machine Tools are discovered".      

The tileset question was a fantastic one: The game only crashes using the
amplio2 tileset.  I do not see a crash with hex2t, isophex, isotrident or
trident, so I now have a way to continue playing my games.  Also, now that I
try to repro the problem turn by turn, it was the discovery of Machine Tools
that brings about the crashes, so there may be an issue rendering the sprite
for Artillery.  

As a quick comment, I've already attached a save file from before the crash. 
I can keep playing indefinitely as long as I don't double-click on a city.

In terms of non-crashing warnings I see when playing the game, I consistently
see the following in my terminal window when I first execute freeciv-gtk2:

Over the course of playing the game, I'll consistently see messages like the
following:

"/usr/local/Cellar/freeciv/2.5.1_1/share/freeciv/stdsounds/inh2o.ogg"
1: Can't open file
"/usr/local/Cellar/freeciv/2.5.1_1/share/freeciv/stdsounds/foot3.ogg"

And:
(freeciv-gtk2:32265): Gdk-WARNING **: Source with depth 1 unsupported
