But! When I replace MS-himem.sys by FD-himem.exe, smartdrv runs! MEMA reports:

Note two things: DBLBUFF is loaded (msdos.sys contains DoubleBuffer=2 in [Options] section) and there is CUSTOM and CTMOUSE in UMB, which loaded successfuly in any configuration (though, smartdrv reboots with MS-himem even if these utilities are removed).
So if MS HIMEM reboots or fails with the FreeDOS kernel and/or utility setup, what do you want done with FreeDOS HIMEM?
PS: I already reported about incompatabilities between FD-EMM386 and MS-HIMEM earlier. For example, 2004-07-13 I wrote: "something wrong happen when used (under FreeDOS) HIMEM 3.95 from Win98: after loading command.com system is rebooted. Bug?".
That would be an incompatibility with FreeDOS HIMEM, not FreeDOS EMM386. Correct? But I'm not interested in Win98 support, because it's not a DOS environment and likely depends on undocumented internals. And additional kernel support.
PPS: Send you smartdrv.exe and himem.sys?
I have HIMEM.SYS.
