I don't think it only happens when accessing long file names because I would get the errors immediately after typing vim on the commandline (however, vim could be accessing long file names in the background). Another program compiled with DJGPP that gives me problems with DOSLFN is ls; except it sometimes gives errors and sometimes does not.
