So apparently VirtualBox 6.1.22 has a surprising amount
of problems with DOS games and I wonder why that is the
case. I guess all games work equally well or unwell for
all boot options, not just for your choice "3"?

It might be specific to VirtuaBox for NixOS, in the sense that NixOS often
have to apply specific patches to allows to build programs where all files
relative to a program are inside one directory, which is not at all usual for
Linux.
I might try a more classic Linux.
Did not really try other options than 3, was late in night.
