The only reason my main retro box is a 286 rather than an 8088/8086 was that it's easier to find parts for a 286 - but because it's only got 1 MB RAM I pretty much use it as a glorified XT.

When I was growing up, XT-class machines were pretty much everywhere - especially the Tandy 1000EX. (I've actually owned 3 Tandy 1000s, and some of my early FreeDOS testing and C coding was done on a 1000HX.)
