Of course it is a BATCH file and not a very complex one. I don’t think it is
even as complex as the CDROM.BAT that initializes a CD/DVD drive.

But it does one very important thing. It makes it very very easy for end-users
to have networking on platforms supported by FDNET.

A few years back, there was some confusion about licensing for FDNET. So, we
pulled FDNET from the release and other locations pending further examination.

That action resulted in a huge blow-back from users. Most of those users had no
idea how to get networking functional on their own.

This led us to focus on resolving any issues and the eventual return of FDNET.

We have been issuing Release Candidates for several months indicating the
eminent release of FreeDOS 1.4. Now, the 1.4 release build is only two weeks
away. Major changes at this point cannot be implemented.

However as you point out, we do provide a newer version in the FreeDOS mTCP
package. Since we should avoid providing two different versions of DCHP in the
two packages, I will update the version in FDNET.

Since the two packages will contain the same version of DHCP. I will replace
the mTCP sources with a text file in the FDNET package. The README.TXT will say:

FDNET uses DHCP.EXE created by Michael Brutman.

The sources for DHCP.EXE are available in the FreeDOS mTCP package.

Sources for DHCP.EXE may also be found at the developers website.

I’m no DOS networking expert. I can just imagine how much FDNET could be
improved if an expert like you adopted the project.
