I can't reproduce your problem in VMware Player 2.5.1 here. I'm using
`base' FreeDOS 1.0 + latest HIMEMX, JEMM386, LBACACHE, FDAPM and
registered PKUNZIP 2.50 (34,335 bytes).

You could try to remove CDRCACHE and LBACACHE from FDCONFIG.SYS temporarily.
