In a mood for some experimenting I've rebuilt kernel 2040 sources but with (inside config.b/config.bat) : "SET XUPX==upx --ultra-brute --8086 --lzma"
The process seems to finish with succes, resulting in a 43KB kernel instead of a 45KB one, but the resulting kernel isn't bootable. Without the --lzma parameter it does boot. Are any specific changes needed to support UPX's LZMA compression method in addition to UCL and NRV? Perhaps only the EXEFLAT part? (for that matter, any other compressors supported, like APACK?)
