Please explain the dosemu install problems some more... Actually dosemu can be easier: There is no need to partition or format or even sys (!) anything, You can go to the directories on the cdrom which contain all the *x.zip files (for example one has all the base files) and unzip them into a fdos directory on your dosemu drive. Note that you can tell dosemu to use any Linux directory as a DOS drive, even as the C: drive. You can either edit the ~/.dosemurc file to make C: point where YOU want, or you can start dosemu and look which files you have in C: to find out where IT put the default C: on your Linux directory :-). Note that DOSEMU comes with special tools like "exitemu" which you have to copy to your new C: in case you move C: around ;-). Make sure you update the kernel dot sys and command.com files as well: http://rugxulo.googlepages.com/ has up to date versions. Next you may want to edit your config / autoexec. You can also install FreeDOS on any computer from within Windows or Linux in similar ways, without using the installer, but you will have to run SYS afterwards which is not needed for dosemu. There are special tools for Windows and Linux which do the work of SYS (mkbootfat, sys-freedos-linux, ...) :-). So you can do a full install of FreeDOS without ever booting any DOS cd or floppy or image thereof :-). Hmmm if that does not sound easy to you: Well dosemu can also boot from real and virtual cdrom so you CAN use the installer :-). Let me know if there are caveats. For example because your C: drive is not FAT formatted in default DOSEMU, the FreeDOS installer cdrom might complain or suggest formatting it. We would have to FIX that in FreeDOS 1.1 then, I guess.
