Hi!

Network related are: fprot wattcp aspi scsi usbdos via wget dfl
cdrtool lynx arachne hxrt lnxsmal crynwr fdstpop bsflite openxp
vnc. Big are: xharbor kraptor doom vi* fpascal owatcom. So if
you install without network, you have no fprot (clamav clamscan
can be downloaded from Rugxulo) and no VIA onboard sound / ASPI /
SCSI / USB drivers (but you can use USB BIOS support instead) and
no network browsers / similar. Having no ASPI / SCSI also limits
your ability to write/burn CD/DVD. SCSI harddisk will still work
because BIOS supports them :-).

See the list above - you have the choice between having to install
a FEW packages manually later and having crashes during install
and incomplete installations... I strongly recommend the former!

You also say you want FreeDOS as alternative for MS DOS. MS DOS only
contains BASE packages not ALL packages. If you only install BASE of
FreeDOS, then install is a lot easier. Actually you can install almost
all packages (only avoid network) and still have easy install. You
can install network and remaining packages after initial install.

Interesting that EMM386 "works if". But again, please find out
whether updating EMM386 to JEMM386 makes option 1 AND 2 work.
You can also update HIMEM to HIMEMX. All from www.japheth.de :-)

In short, all options that are SUPPOSED to work crash and all
other options are not useful for you? In what way does it
crash, waiting for a DHCP server for infinite time?

Networking in DOS is not simple... Maybe this is why MS DOS
never installed networking itself, you had to do it yourself.

Try if installing without network first and installing network
later helps. Maybe TEMP etc would be created AFTER the hang.
You can use FDPKG to install packages later.

Check if you have a working command.com in c:/fdos/bin and
check if your autoexec.bat exists. Also remove the HIGH from
the SHELLHIGH line and check if that helps.

The FreeDOS CD meant for MS DOS users is not fdfullcd, it is fdbasecd!

Eric :-)
