Hello, I'm writing this to see if I'm here.

While I'm here (if I'm here) I'd like to ask if anyone has used the
Desmet C compiler, and if it would be suitable for including in FreeDOS.

Have you?
Would it?

Here's a link if you've never heard of it; http://www.desmet-c.com/
Yes, I heard of it, in fact I bought and used it back in the '80s when I
had my first on PC, before I switched to Turbo C when that one became
available because it was at that time already ANSI C and had a much
better IDE/debugger.

And yes, I would like to see this included in FreeDOS, as it is the only
C compiler that both produces 16 bit code and can even run on a
minimalistic FreeDOS system with only 256KB of RAM and two floppy discs.

I have kind of lost contact with Bill, the guy that managed to get
DeSmet C released under the GPL, and also haven't worked for quite a
while to produce a proper new manual for the 3.1 version by OCR'ing the
PDF manual, the version which is ANSI C compatible (while Bill was more
interested in the 2.51 version, which still was only  K&R).

But when I mentioned this here on the list years back, the idea was
pretty much shot down by all those proponents of Open Watcom and GCC,
which neither one runs on FreeDOS itself without jumping through hoops...

Hello, and thanks for your reply!

I'm surprised it isn't included; given it's license, size and it's ability (taking your word for this as I haven't tried it) to generate 16 bit code (which puts it over GCC and on a par with Watcom?).

I've usually wound up giving up on watcom and just installing an old copy of borland -with the obvious limits that I'm sure y'all have covered time and again.
