My first question is: does this actually have a BIOS, or is it
UEFI-only? I don't know the Atom netbook hardware, at all.

It's probably UEFI, but boot into the UEFI "setup" program and see if
it has a 'Legacy' setting. That would emulate BIOS for a legacy OS
like FreeDOS (or any DOS).
