Just a correction, it wouldn't be sssd_default.log. It would be sssd_<ipa_domain>.log. The ipa-client doesn't set up the 'default' domain, it names it after the IPA domain. So it's possible you've been looking at the wrong log. (This could also explain your comment about zero-length logs earlier).
