What do you mean, it's not open source? Sun doesn't control the
implementations (although it does have a default one); it controls the
specification, which they *want* everyone to see. Although the source
isn't totally open, you can get the source to their JVM and native
libraries by giving little more than your email. If you want an open
source implementation, talk to the Blackdown folks.
Now, they do control the specification, but it's not like X11, C, C++, or
Motif aren't controlled by a centralized organization. I assume all open
source GUI toolkits are built on top of X11.
