Heya :-) I think the sarcasm is allowed in this case. When a user (totally unaware of how a unix box works) tries to get free software to work and it doesn't work and cluelessly mails the userlist on the first error he/she gets, I feel Alan sure can reply in this way. Of course, this is a user-helping-list, but do be aware that radius is not something you "just set up". Radius itself is a tricky thing, and should require a reasonable amount of knowledge about the system you are going to run it on in the first place. Don't forget that Alan has got a real good point here - I would probably react the same or not react at all. I guess for new users the best thing to do is: LEARN. Never heard of gdb and somebody points you there? LEARN! You're not buying this product and a lot of people are putting effort in this. Of course, I agree with you on the fact that freeradius does not have sufficient documents (for newbies!) to set up. But that's where this list is for - it's for freeradius users who have a problem and do not know how to fix it. In this case, the reaction of the guy in trouble will probably be something like "what is gdb?" and "he has a point there, he can't see what's happening on my system so I need to provide more information". Being friendly is a way, being sarcastic makes the user feel guilty and gets his ass on learning how his damn system works :-) But hey, I'm a coder, not a helper so that might explain my answer :-) Cheers, Peter

First of all I'd like to thank you for the enormous amount of work you're putting into freeradius. Not only in programming and bugfixing, but also in replying to questions and panic mails on the list. It's good to see a project being so alive for a change. However, I'm getting more and more amazed by the amount of sarcasm you put into your replies. I can imagine it becomes somewhat tiresome to answer the same (damn) questions over and over again, but please do keep in mind: most of us get scared when things go even as far as editing a makefile or using ldd and the likes. Fact is: most people are used to things like rpm's or maybe a (./configure:make:make install) with their eyes closed, expecting instant success. I for one never even heard of 'GDB'. Freeradius is great, but it does suffer a lot from lack of organized docs / pointers to them. That makes it scary the first time you try to get it to work :) Just needed to point that out. Keep up the good work please, Serge. -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [ mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ] Verzonden: woensdag 3 oktober 2001 16:30 Aan: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Onderwerp: Re: Why radwho core dumped? I don't have access to your machine, so I can't tell what's going on, sorry. Alan DeKok. - List info/subscribe/unsubscribe?
