I don't doubt what you are saying, but I'm still seeing a password garbage with both secrets set to 'test' (retyped about 20 times without the quotes). My client.conf entry looks like this:

client 147.178.19.249 {
        secret          = test
        shortname       = testvpn
}

Is there something wrong with that?

  The user probably didn't type this in...

auth: Failed to validate the user.
WARNING: Unprintable characters in the password. ? Double-check the shared secret on the server and the NAS!

  Exactly.

Any other ideas based on this?

  The shared secret is not the same on both ends. NOTHING else causes
the password to be garbage.
