Did you follow http://vuksan.com/linux/dot1x/802-1x-LDAP.html? Do you have cleartext/unencrypted password somewhere in LDAP schema? There's an alternative setup that I use, that will work even when there's no cleartext password in LDAP, by using LDAP bind.
