I love SDL.  It really isn't meant to translate keystrokes into ASCII.

With ctrl held down, the ~ key wasn't making it through as-is.  that's
been specifically fixed..

the crtl/alt mods get wierd sometimes, as the keys no longer map to
"real" keys.  Anyhow.
