The underlying operating system for Android is actually Linux. (And if I
remember correctly, the ios in iphones is still based on the BSD like
system that OSX is based on)
Bruce, when you say the radio design presently looks at lot like the USRP,
I'm hoping the price isn't going to look a lot like USRP as well. I'm not
expecting Wouxun or Baofeng UV-3R prices here, but I'm hoping it's not too
beyond the price range of the big 3 HTs. Incidentally, the chip in the
UV-3R is SDR technology going by the block diagram. It's a shame that we
can't get at the DSP to reprogram it. I keep my eyes open on
www.aliexpress.com for stuff that might be easy to modify. There's a bunch
of cheap GSM Android phones on there. Also would like to try getting one of
the Windows CE based GPS devices to try to mod for running APRSISCE mobile
one day.
Thanks for taking the initiative on this. I really feel the big 3 have gone
stale. It was a bit before my time as a ham, but from what I've seen the
major companies did most of the innovative stuff in the 80's and early
90's. Now it's just incremental changes, if any at all, between revisions
of their product lines.
