At the moment I have two 2m FFSK 2400baud modems that I am using for testing. The idea is to keep the modulation specific to the band your operating in for optimisation and efficiency, and to utilise as many off the self parts as possible.

For instance in the US we have privileges in the 3GHz band and some of the commercial chips happen to fall into this frequency http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/5611 so for 3GHz it will be 64QAM

We will design a 3GHz VFO module that will plug in to the smart radio and allow communications on 3GHz.

Likewise we will have a 144MHz/222MHz/440MHz VFO module. I found a SoC that does all these frequencies.

I am still looking for an modulation scheme for VHF/UHF though.

Peter, you and anyone else interested are more than welcome to join our
effort.
At present we are designing from a high level how things will inter-operate.

The road map consists of:
DSMART Protocol
Repeater/Base Station
Mobile Station
Hand held Station

The eventual goal being a smart amateur radio transceiver system that is
fully open source in software and hardware.

Hi.

I wasn't complaining as such (it probably read that way). I was
working on something a lot more basic, (but with pretty good ability
to expand). I think you're thinking of all the possibilities right
away (which will probably be better in the long run).

I was essentially designing a protocol which was "D-star" like.
Personally it was that way because pretty much all the tools needed
existed already to make a software implementation, all that was
required was describe how to construct and de-construct the data
streams effectively using the available bitrate in the best way
possible. But I also was going about trying to make it more expandable
in the long run.

You can probably see my general idea in the history of the group here.

I think you look to have thought out the design a lot more than me, at
least. Any ideas on modulation choice and bit rate etc though?

Best regards,

Peter.
