The other main issue is that D-Star is voice centric. The digital system
should be concerned with moving data bits to the correct destination. It
shouldn't matter what the application is voice, pictures, GPS ect. That
is the main distinction we are making.

for, in a sense) the USTrust; if the main trust server failed, the
only D-Star repeaters that would go off-line are the ones that are
tied to it and have no other source for data. The rest of us would
likely not even notice unless we were talking to someone that
disappeared because of it.

UDR56K4 Universal Digital Radio: http://www.nwdigitalradio.com/ These
guys (I've spoken the John K7VE on a number of occasions) are building
a 70 cm version of Icom's ID-1, from the looks of things. I imagine a
similar unit for the other ham bands could be done as well.

share to show that D-Star isn't quite the way you view it.

D-Star has several design flaws, a few being:
Raw uncoordinated Ethernet frames on the data side. Causes
collisions,
unnecessary transmissions. Think Ethernet Hub.
Padded transmissions. Voice data segments always transmit regardless,
even if there is no voice data to transmit. (Wasted transmission time)
Back end D-Star administration has a single authority, thus a single

None of the D-Star platform is open source. Only the protocol has

released.
D-Star is essentially a "Digital Bandage" on top of existing legacy
