Mike,
You're talking about the Icom implementation when you say that none of the
platform is open-source. As far as the complaints you make, I will grant that
the first one is valid, but I don't see an easy way around it on RF; the others
are either limitations based on the (incomplete) Icom implementation, or
totally irrelevant when you
look at the big picture, like I have been doing for some time. For
example, the Icom DD implementation only has one speed, even though the
wording of the spec document implies that it should be usable at any
rate available on the supported ham bands (which are not specified).
Another example is that of the slow data; it's not intended to be a
replacement for a "missing" slow DD mode. It's meant to be used in conjunction
with the voice data to send files and such while talking. I guess what I'm
getting at is that many of the pieces are already in
place and some of us would like to fill out the missing parts and be
able to create interoperability with new digital systems with minimal
fuss.
ircDDB: http://www.ircddb.net is an open compliment (or replacement for, in a
sense) the USTrust; if the main trust server failed, the only D-Star repeaters
that would go off-line are the ones that are tied to it and have no other
source for data. The rest of us would likely not even notice unless we were
talking to someone that disappeared because of it.
pcrepeatercontroller: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/pcrepeatercontroller An
open source software collection by Jonathan Naylor G4KLX that provides D-Star
Repeater controller software, including a Split Repeater to implement
multi-receiver (and transmitter) D-Star Repeater installations.
ircDDBGateway: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/ircddbgateway A D-Star Gateway
application by G4KLX that uses the ircDDB system to connect to other D-Star
systems, including Icom G2/G4ULF systems running the G2_ircddb add-on.
DV-RPTR: http://www.dvrptr.de A German designed board that currently supports
running repeaters and nodes; there are AMBE and transceiver boards designed to
plug into this and these will be shipping shortly.
UDR56K4 Universal Digital Radio: http://www.nwdigitalradio.com/ These guys
(I've spoken the John K7VE on a number of occasions) are building a 70 cm
version of Icom's ID-1, from the looks of things. I imagine a similar unit for
the other ham bands could be done as well.
Just a few things I've found over the past year that I thought I would share to
show that D-Star isn't quite the way you view it.
