Trying to (re) use a TNC might not be so easy I think.

Since the default processing is packetbased rather than
stream, the buffering will create delay. Also, the actual bitrate
achieved will vary due to the SDLC bit stuffing, and the 
starting / ending flag words (depending on frame size).

Now the Z-SIO CAN be programmed for "straight sync", with 8 or 16
bits frame sync, but this involves rewriting the code, and
supplying a new prom, so this is only useful if one has 100's
of these that just wait to be recycled.

My guess is that it would be the same or less effort to use
a modern MCU to do (de)serialization of a desired format.
