Hi Bruce,
Oeps. I send this with the wrong email-address yesterday so it didn't go throu the list. 2nd try! Well, looks like a very neat idea ... but (and I guess you could expect this one comming), I'm not that sure if this is really what we need for a "production" modem. As discussed before, (I'll just repeat this for the people on the list to follow this) I try to keep two things seperate: - there is a goal to write a "production" modem, designed to get on the air as quickly as possible, which would allow people to experiment. For me, this does not have to be the most advanced modem out there but it works so people can start playing around with it. The 4800 bps modem using FEC 1/3 repetition code is such an example. - there is also a goal to make the BEST modem out there and go beyond the normal ideas of how a modem should be. Your proposal would fit nicely in the 2nd group. Developing it and iroing out all bugs will take some time but that does not really matter. As people are already able to use the "production" modem, that's not an issue. Any good ideas that then emerge from the experimentor (note: "experimentor", not "experimental") modem can then be ported to the production modem once the code has stabilsed. With a lot of help from David and Bill Cowley, I now have a 2400 bps modem more or less ready, be it without any FEC or interleaving. As there is already a lot of code out there for the FEC systems that have now been chosen (golay and hamming), the main issue now is interleaving. Now, we are in luck. Somebody (Jim) also contacted me offlist and he is also interest in that part. (see other mail with more information about that). So, with a bit of luck not bumbing into to much bugs, we should have a functional 2400 bps modem out there in a couple of weeks from now (my idea is 3 to 4 weeks from now); so that people can start experimenting with it on the air. The big advantage is that you -for the more advantaced system you are thinking of- are under no pressure to come up and develop something quick-quick. For the general framework, can you make and publish a document describing it? 73 Kristoff - ON1ARF ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Everyone hates slow websites.
