I've already heard about someone, who made it with an TI ARM
Microcontroller, using it's GPIO and UART... But he has also subscribed

Quite big carriers... I mean, Codec2 may use about 1.25 kHz (with band
guards!) - meaning 2,880 channels in that bandwith...

Well, this is not only an encoder/decoder, but also a Modem you are
talking about...
There is a softmodem in the project page, but I'm also fabiliar with a
hardware-solution, that is Plug-n-Play...

Have to agree - a computer is truly overdimensioned, reduces mobility in
terms of weight, size and power consumption...
Like taking a Laptop when you want to play your mp3's on the go...
