Hi Bruce,

I totally agree to your point....

I think Shane Burell ported Codec2 with fixed bitrates of 1200...2400
bit/s for the Texas Instruments LM4F120 least-cost microcontroller...
It costs USD 13 per piece and has a USB port for easy programming. You
can find it here https://estore.ti.com/Stellaris-LaunchPad.aspx or it's
latest version https://estore.ti.com/Tiva-C-LaunchPad.aspx with
increased performace at the same price...

As known from TI, it has a huge toolkit and very well documented
features - including a standard ARM-arch core with floatpoint-unit (as
unitl now, all Codec2 implementations require floatpoint support!)

Trough the digital-analog, I2C and UART-buses, you can easily connect an
audio driver or modulator... Also I/O via USB is possible for testing
and debugging...

I think it's worth a try, since it costs just one - third of a Raspberry
Pi Model B or about a half of a Raspberry Pi model A...

Altrough you may need additional components, such as a audio driver, it
still seems a pretty useful option on the way to implement Codec2 in
Hardware...
Once it's up and runnung, it may work it's job pretty well, and I would
like to give it a try on CB-Radio...

Thanks to the narrow bitrate of Codec2, it may be used in conjunction
with FHSS and DSSS to increase signal robustness - besides Viterbi FEC....

In fact, the Raspberry Pi is the wrong device for this job. It was
created to teach schoolchildren to program in Phyton... You could
already see it when you take a look on the hardware connections... The
RPi camera is introduced, and the matching Display is coming soon, too...

Of course you can compile Codec2 for the Pi... Since it has no
microphone or connector of it, it seems party pointless w/o a
USB-soundcard...

Greetings,
Netzblockierer
