The files serial.h and serial.c in 
http://gdbproxy.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gdbproxy/gdbproxy/gdbproxy/gdbproxy/ 
provide a simple way to abstract serial ports on Unix and Windows. It 
has been doing good service for years.
