I've often wondered how broad is the church of codec2/freeDV developers,
especially after the recent discussions ;-) ?
Some of the project developers CVs are amazing but do we include many
radio-ham / software hobbyists in our ranks?
Because my career background is broadcasting, not software, I consider
the C2/fdv as an exercise in self-training. I now know a lot more about
vocoders, modems, LSPs than I did before.:-D

Open-source has never had the luxury of too much documentation therefore
it's hard for someone with the enthusiasm, but not the time, to get
'into' C2/fdv software. A complex projects such as this probably need an
'orientation guide'. (yes I could do that for you if you wanted, but it
might be incorrect!)

The supplied READMEs are fine but you really need to scan through the .c
files to find the meat; the problem here though is connecting all the
concepts together into the final project. It's frustrating sometimes,
analogous to finding out how a TV set works by taking it to pieces!

In a nutshell do we need to encourage all and sundry (with their
respective skills) to join in the development or is it just down to a
few, very gifted, experts?

All the best

Andrew G3NR
