Well, maybe that’s the reason. I already wonder about a modem sampling rate of
7500 Hz, as today’s most audio applications are using integer
divisors/multipliers of 48000 Hz.

I wonder if the shoulders are a result of the sample rate conversion filter?
The modem actually operates at 7500 Hz sample rate, and a filter is used to
convert that to and from 8000 Hz.
