Steve, I guess you can have direct memory access with 8 kHz too. E.g. in our
advanced SDR architecture we are using audio codecs like TLV320 working from 8
to 96 kHz. I can’t understand this 7,5 kHz detour rather than 8 kHz directly.

Sound cards are a cheap alternative, thus require a narrow sampling rate
option. A microcontroller A/D and D/A could do 7500 directly in DMA, but you
can buy a whole sound card cheaper than those audio codec chips.
Especially with a headset and USB thrown in :-)
