Don, I'm not so sure about "major radio makers", my thinking was more around hams building their own rigs (that's still fairly common in the UK, though maybe not elsewhere). Such a module would then give an easy way for someone who is more focused on the RF engineering side of things to add digital voice. That was what I was really wanting to do with a few of them myself.
Brian, "Can the RF design which seemed to be the sticking point last time be hired by a kickstarter etc.?" Tell me more. RF design is more my skillset. :-) David, I see Eric did something similar but changed the processor to a different package and then went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to build the firmware with a modified pinout. Keeping it binary-compatible with the SM1000 is certainly appealing to me. All, I'm rapidly concluding that even a relatively minor processor change is beyond my abilities in terms of the software changes required. My current inclination is to build a module with the same processor as the SM1000 and a simplified interface, and then not worry too much about 700D. If in the future the SM1000 does end up supporting 700D then the module will run the same firmware, if it doesn't then it doesn't. And if one day there ends up being a new SM1000 with a different processor I can always make a module version of that in the future. The good news is I've got it down to about a 30x30 mm square at the moment, which is starting to look reasonable to build into a handheld or similar. Smaller is possible, but it gets into diminishing returns quite rapidly, my guess is the hard limit is more like 25x20 mm without changing the processor.
