Thank you all for your responses (I also had a few off list).
Very interesting. Some take-aways for me:
1/ It's not as onerous as I had thought for companies to link a LPGL
library with a closed source application.
2/ There seems to be deep value in having an open source speech codec
that can't be closed. This is something I have perhaps lost track of; I
spend most of my time messing around with the DSP.
