Suggest the key requirement here is "ease of use", i.e. how to make
FreeDV as easy to use as SSB. An outboard box being one solution.
 Given the world is going SDR, a software library that can be included
in any radio is another.

> FreeDV further (e.g. fixed-point ports, improved/more modes, etc.)

* Technical excellence - e.g. speech quality, low and high SNR channel
performance, competitive with analog modes, speaker independence,
robustness to acoustic background noise, robustness to microphone
types/spectral shaping, level variation, source code/software
engineering quality.
