Hi Alan, I recommend upgrading FreeDV to the latest (1.7 or 1.8 devel) as there have been a lot of fixes and improvements since 1.5 that should improve stability. In addition, if at all possible, I'd use the PulseAudio version instead of PortAudio since the former seems to be better supported on Linux in general.
