Well, we can do -vf expand=:::::monitor_aspect,dsize=display_x/display_y

This would work in fullscreen mode or if it's a non-fullscreen window.
And I was wrong before when I said -fs is a no-op with our own window:
-fs will cause mplayer to consider the window to be the screen size, so
-fs causes mplayer to fill the window.  (i.e. we need -fs)
