I have a Matrox G400-TV in a fairly slow (450 MHz) machine.

Watching TV in overlay mode (xawtv) works great, but I have not been able to get good tv output from mplayer.

My impression is that:
* MPlayer does not use overlay-mode, but actually tries to grab and process the data from the TV before displaying it.
* The v4l drivers for the G400 conflict with the mga_vid driver for mplayer. If I try to run mplayer with TV input and xmga output, the output will be erratic and flicker. If I then try to run mplayer and display a regular film clip, then it will also flicker even though it displayed properly before doing the tv experiment. After removing and reloading the v4l drivers, mplayer mga_vid display will work again.

My guess is that there is a hardware limitation in the G400, where some part (the Back End Scaler (BES), or YUV->RGB conversion) is used in both TV input and mga_vid output, and that both cannot be used at the same time. If anyone could confirm this I would appreciate it.

So, my conclusion is that I would like to watch TV with freevo using overlay mode. I saw that is such a program in the CVS attic, in matrox_g400/Attic/v4l1_to_mga.c. What is the story of this program? Why was it removed?

If my conclusions are correct, I would like to add an alternative to mplayer to do TV watching for freevo. Would there be any objections to this?
