I think this is vital for making 1.4 usable for different users, especially now that we have tvtime, mplayer (and xine?) which can be disabled/enabled arbitrarily. I'm not familiar with xine, does it currently support TV viewing, and would it be able to do music audio playback (to replace mplayer)? It'll help eliminate the need for multiple installed media players. So by default, we would either have mplayer or xine for all playback functions instead of the mix-n-match currently. (There isn't a configuration flag to select one or the other yet, other than by manually playing with the plugin list).
