Currently freevo still favors mplayer over xine for most functions except for dvd playback. But for someone who wants to use xine exclusively (if it were possible), they'd have to do multiple plugin.remove() and plugin.activate() to set it up correctly. It would be easier for new users if there was a way to select either mplayer or xine via a single statement (else the configuration tool should have this capability).
