As you already worked this out it seems to be Unicode related.
export LC_CTYPE=POSIX will work and then in local_conf.py
LOCALE='latin-1'. I've two boxes where I run vbi2srt one with and one
without Unicode support.
vbi2srt -h will report what the locale and codeset are, last line.
vbi2srt -C will print character mappings, checking around characters
0x7C if they report a '?' then Unicode support is not enabled. Of course
the xterm and xserver should be configured to use Unicode fonts.
Teletext seems to use ISO-646 character mappings, these characters are
remapped for different languages:
0x23,0x24,0x40,0x5b,0x5c,0x5d,0x5e,0x5f,0x60,0x7b,0x7c,0x7d,0x7e
eg: 7B { '?' 7C | '?' 7D } '?' means non-Unicode.
If needed where is the best place to put it because i don't start
freevo from the cmd line ?. And isn't there a locale setting in
freevo itself that can be used ?
I use a boot script to start the freevo recordserver and webserver.

Although it seems to work without the locale setting there is some
extraneous info in the subtitles for example;

an absolutely perfect round.
Is this somehow related to the locale setting ?.
These are colour codes.
- You don't mention anywhere with what version of freevo or ivtv this
should work. I'm using freevo 1.5.3 and ivtv 0.4.0, should vbi2srt
work with this versions or should i upgrade ?
ivtv-0.4.0
freevo-1.5.4 (have also used freevo-1.5.3)

This version works with both Unicode and non-Unicode terminals, two
fonts are included in tar file can be loaded into the X-server and the
font name can passed on the command line or the xterm can be set to use
the font with xtermcontrol --font="...". Because of the limited number
of characters available only English, German and Czech work properly on
non-Unicode xterms.
