It seems that is not maintained or has some incompatibilities with latest versiones of Alsa. With qjackctl[2] is possible to plug the streams visually to different effects. Jack seems very cool for processing audio in realtime but I got not much luck with it. I tried to convert an stereo stream to a fake surround on the fly but then I realised that with my new speakers, Logitech z5500[3], set to do Dolby prologic I got some fake surround sound when using spdif as output. I think you could try routing the sound to Jack, process the sound with some LADSPA plugins and finally output to ac3jack to reencode to AC3.
