Not all sound files will contain the requested number of channels. Most MP3's
and OGG files are 2-channel. Many US television broadcasts are also 2-channel
while the majority are still 1-channel. DVD's, SVCD's and VCD's which have
been recorded in 5.1 or 6.0 audio will have the requisite number of channels to
play back.
If you want to create a fake surround from your output via the sound card
(not sure about SPDIF or Coax) make sure the audio jacks are shared and set
"Duplicate Front." This forces the rear channels to play a copy of the front
channels. The front and rear volume controls may be locked together when
"Duplicate Front" is set but I'm not totally sure about this.
Dischi, you may want to try playing that back in Xine and see what you get.

Thanks. I just downloaded vom wmv test files from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
and created an .asoundrc:
pcm.ac3 {
type a52
channels 6
slavepcm "hw:0,0"
}
So far so good, I now run
mplayer -ao alsa:device=ac3 -channels 6 ...
but the sound is a bit strange. One files has the speaker rear left,
one other file does not use the rear speaker at all. Someone an idea
how to make it right?
Next question: if I have less than 6 channels in the media file, can I
still use -channels 6 and the defined pcm device in my .asoundrc? I
tried playing a mp3 file with that settings and it is using the left
and right front speaker as it should be.
It would be nice if Freevo 2.0 (or in this case kaa.popcorn) would
support such stuff.
