I am running sdl-ttf 2.0.6 and pygame 1.5.5 without problem. When I ran pygame 1.5.6 it broke. I'm running freevo using the gentoo ebuild, this is 1.3.2-pre4.
I just checked the gentoo runtime ebuild, it is building a patched sdl-ttf 2.0.5 which is presumably static to freevo. If there is any more info I can provide which would help, just let me know. I could try going back up to pygame 1.5.6 just to be sure. I guess this could be gentoo specific. Interestingly, I also have an older freevo (based on the binary tar ball not the gentoo ebuild, and this seemed to work with pygame 1.5.6) I guess for now I'd just say anyone running the gentoo ebuild who has this problem may want do downgrade pygame for now.
