mplayer uses xvideo directly (as well as xine) when in Xfree86. so yes it is
100% automatic to use the mpeg hardware acceleration IF the video drivers
can support it... that's the cool part of freevo using mplayer or xine.

even a old ATI mach 64 will allow me to play a mpeg2 file with very little
processor load on a pentium I 166..  using hardware playback is the only way
to go, and if you can have it integrated with your display hardware then
even better.

I don't think mp1e or mpeg1 can shake a stick at mpeg2.  mpeg1 isn't 
even interlaced is it?

Does their chipset support mpeg2?  From the website:

Color key, Chroma key, DirectDraw & Mpeg-1 playback.

I sold my dvd player to finance my Freevo habit. :)

I am not so sure the use of the decoder is so automatic... well, at 
least I hope it is.
